Lord Kiefer of Rowan

I wish none of this were happening.

Would it be too much to ask? Just a year to myself, back in Rowan, with Nerida and my children? When we're home, there's always patrols and circuits to be done. When we're away, well. It's always business.

And now we go to war.

I feel we might come to regret these ties we've made to House Lireth. Already, look at where they've taken us.

[Filter: Dentorians]

I am not sure how much of our campaign we wish to share with the Koriners, and thus I will write this beneath this filter.

I received word that Mansoure's armies are to march to the way barracks at the border. I've mobilized the troops as well as I can, seen to the outfitting of the knights, and acquainted myself with the ... unique circumstances behind the Valkurias. They are ... very impressive women, by the way.

I'm afraid we can't leave yet, however. Mansoure is still in uproar. Try as I have, I haven't been able to restore order. I don't dare consider what might happen were I to leave, now. It would be a disaster.

What am I to do?

I've thought about this since last night, and I've come to a decision.

Mother should be the one protecting Mansoure since she's its ruling Lady, but with her keeping safe in Tersel that responsibility falls to me. Mansoure is my home, and I should be doing whatever I can to protect it.

Lord Derek, I thought it may please you to know that I and my goodsisters intend to depart for Emeron tomorrow, as well. Emeron owes you a great debt for managing the city in our absence; I know it can't have been easy. Please relay this information and do pass on word that our armies shall depart for the pass as well, as soon as possible. I imagine they will join Lord Kiefer and the Mansoure troops en route.

Francisca, Canti, please do be sure that all your things are prepared. We'll leave with the men on the march in the morning, though our directions may differ. Do be sure your sisters know; you may see them before I.

I have given some thought to this ... issue, with Mansoure's leadership. You should know that Ella has been making overtures to the task. I have kept it as quiet as I could, but you are right that Felicia cannot handle the task in her condition, and surely Gloria is not prepared to lead a city at war. Ella, however ... originally from Mansoure, and trained to the task. She would be wasted in Emeron. She resents my authority, as well.

Why not approach her with the offer? She would thank you for it, and I see no better alternative.

It was not meant to be this difficult, to get Laina a seat. Of course, I was never meant to not have one myself. Justine has no business here, I think everyone can agree on that. But there is nothing that can be done. The Queen's-

For everything I expected, how could anyone have ever guessed ... that.

I can't imagine the rest of the country will hear about -- whatever that was. No, they'll hear that Hanmor was routed and Nasen was killed by the rebels as they celebrated their victory, or some such rumor. Not the truth. Never the truth. Forna's fall proved people in this country don't have any taste for facts.

But when those are the facts ...

I wouldn't believe it myself, if I hadn't seen it. Those men just -- they didn't just die. They vanished. They were gone. There was nothing left. It was like that thing devoured them.

And we could have been down there, among them.

It could have been us.

[Filter: Aekaran]

Well, I hope you're about ready to get moving again. After all of ... that, I'm eager to get as far from that battlefield as possible as quickly as we possibly can, and I can't imagine you'll disagree.

Why hasn't he written? He should have written again by now. It should be over.

No, I'm just worried over nothing. He's just busy, as he always is. He's not the man he used to be, taking every spare minute to beg for my attention.

I don't have time to worry about him. An entire army will be here within weeks. An army we cannot hope to fight alone. I have to worry about Lahn.

We need men. Father and Daffyd sent a missive, but I fear it will not arrive in time.

You know, I had a thought, today.

Lady Isanae is -- understandably -- all in a rush to return home, and intends to dispatch Emeron's knights, as she should, of course. But while Lireth has Hasten and Tarmon and a wealth of speakers for it, and Mansoure has my dear brother to report in through these books ... Emeron is quite lacking in such assets, no? Perhaps Lady Isanae and Lord Hasten both would find it useful to have a man with Emeron's armies who can write and receive reports in an instant?

It would require me to travel east with you, rather than north with them, but surely they would concede that this is the wisest course.

What do you think, my lady? Does the idea please you?

I know it has been a long time since we talked, and I understand if you don't wish to talk to me now.

I just... I wanted to say thank you, for trying to help me in there. I would not have expected that of you, after the things I said.

Jess, I -- I need to talk. I think I've done something really, really stupid, and I can't -- I need to talk to somebody about it. It's ... Dragons, you're not going to be happy with me, but I don't know who else to talk to about this. Please say you're there.

Right.

Fucked that one up, but what the hell was I supposed to do? You don't fucking argue with the man who sells this to you. He says jump, you ask how high. Ain't my fault I lost track of time after that, neither, could happen to anybody.

Well, whatever. Anyway.

If you are still out there ... I wish you'd say something. Anything. Do you know how crazy people are getting here? Do you know what people are saying? They're saying you're pawning the sword, or something like that, and --

And I know that can't be true.

But if you are out there, would you just say something? Anything, Devine, please. Just let me know you're -- still alive. Grampa's beside himself, you ought to see what this has done to him. Please.
