We came upon a village that was in the middle of being ransacked. The commander put me to work for the first time, asking me how he should handle it. It was five knights and thirty soldiers against fifteen men, and I didn't think he needed tactics. He told me that it was the only acceptable answer I could have given him, and he promised me a blanket. So I was happy, and I got to watch the battle.

He led out with knights, and the soldiers raced out to help. Bandits are not known for their excellent longbow skills, so I was surprised when my commander was feathered before he made it to what amounted to their line. Still, the rest of the knights crashed into the bandits, and the ones who held fell apart fast. Too fast. I was too far back to say anything, but the knights weren't paying enough attention to the fact that they were being surrounded.

I finally spotted the archer, a man in the top floor of the inn. A few soldiers did too, and they rushed toward it. Five fell before they made it, and only three lived to enter. I will note here that this archer was never killed during the battle. I'm assuming the remaining soldiers were ambushed in the tavern section.

As you likely predicted in my second paragraph, I'm going to tell you that the knights were soundly defeated. Of the four that were left alive, three lost their horses, and two lost their lives. The other two cut paths out of the fighting, and ran behind a couple of houses for cover against arrows. They yelled for retreat, and I ran with the surviving soldiers.

We walked back into the village this afternoon, and everything was burning. There's a Forna calling card. The new commander doesn't remember promising me a blanket. It's getting very cold at night.

All right, Lirit, go and get yourself ready. We can see the city. We're going to start the siege in a few hours. Set up weapons where the rioters can get to them, spread some rumors about Sylea coming to save them, whatever you have to fucking do.

We need this to go over as quickly as we can. It's still going to take a while, with those trenches, but we need any help we can get.

I hope the rest of you are fucking ready for a long fight.
