Eshene, it's come to my attention that you've been very concerned about the trade bill we were to vote upon today, until matters ... complicated themselves. I had the thought that perhaps there was something in it I was unaware of, that you might be able to help me see the truth of? You have my ear, of course, and I'm sure I might be able to communicate your concerns to some of the other councillors, if certain arrangements could be made.

I hope you're not opposed to this proposal.

I hope that I hear back from either of those two men, soon. it's difficult to find any of that information here, especially not without drawing attention to myself. I have a reputation in this city now. people think of me as Lady Justine's pet before they even think of me as a priest. if the wrong person asks the wrong questions ...

sigh.

I never should have married them. I knew it even on that night, that something was off between them. I should have just walked away then, and avoided all of this ...

... no. no, that's not true. ... I'm not sure I'd trade it.

unfortunately.

I know you have your journal back, as I asked your father to return it to you a few days ago so we could talk. I imagine you've been reading back, catching up, whatever it is that you've pleased to do.

I'm Edeyn, from House Veirnan. You've probably seen me speaking with your father about alliance arrangements, and you and I are going to be leaving tomorrow if the weather permits, which by all reports, it should.

I want you to know, there are girls near your own age at Veirnan. You'll be right at home. I don't want you to be afraid of what I'll be taking you back to. The girls will all be thrilled to meet you and I'm certain you'll make fast friends with all of them.

Do you have any questions for me before we ride out?

For Dragons' sake. Do they honestly have nothing better to do with their lives? Eamon practically can't show his face anymore, the gossip is so overwhelming. Seraphine and I practically can't show our faces anymore. This is absolutely --

Lady Eliza.

Look, we need to talk about the whole arrangement with Eamon and I.

It's not working. It's never really worked, and you know that even better than I do. Dragons, you're the one who told me I needed to learn to act better, way back when all of this started. Well, obviously, I'm a terrible actor, and people are nosy, and having Eamon and I in close proximity is always going to get people sniffing about, even without a flimsy cover story like what we had when he and I switched places.

The entire Hanalan court is gossiping about this. They think it's all some fancy from one of their fairy stories, made up for their entertainment, or if not that, then that they're very clever to have figured it out when no one else has. They think Eamon and I are brothers, that he's some kind of -- younger brother forced into servitude so he doesn't take the crown, and while that's ridiculous, the fact is that they already know everything isn't what it seems.

I think we need to just put an end to it. Can it be so awful to do it now? Whatever danger I was in that forced you all to hide me away, whatever threat there was to me, isn't that unimportant now? Seraphine is safe, and there hasn't been so much as a whisper of any danger to me, and it's not like the entourage that came with Seraphine haven't been keeping their ears open. Half of Dentoria is practically aware of it by now, and probably a good chunk of everyone who reads these journals. Or if they don't know, they at least suspect.

I think it's worn out its welcome, and I think we need to put it away. Eamon wants to go back to Dentoria, and soon, and that's only fair to him, after all the service he's given the Crown. Putting this entire ruse in the ground where it belongs will let him do that. And it'll let Seraphine and I sleep easy again, without wondering if we've missed some crucial act we should have played out and constantly wondering if we're being convincing enough.

What do you say?

So~? Tell me, how did it go?! Was it every bit as beautiful and extravagant as everyone's said it would be? I'll bet all of Atsiria is still busy celebrating, it's not every day that the Jewel of the Desert gets married, after all!

Mother has truly come alive since her arrival...it's almost as if she'd been waiting for something like this. Has she been that desperately lonely at home? I know the household staff is quite close to her, but...mm, I know all too well it's not the same as the companionship of family and close friends. I treasured the time I spend with Edith and Charlotte, of course, but I remember how happy it made me just to be able to visit with Isanae, and my cousins.

If only Mother were able to travel freely to visit whenever she pleased. Or I were able to come visit her more often...
